One of the main goals of modern nitr at ion methodo log y is to increase it s regioselectivity . T he regioselective nit rat ion of toluene and chlor obenzene w ith nit rates and supported nitr ates o n solid acid catalyst s and support s in the presence of acet ic anhydr ide is studied. Clay s are promising so lid acid cataly st s and suppo rt s. Cupric nit rate possesses the best react ivity. Carbon tet rachloride and toluene appear to be the opt imum solvents. Para select ivit ies are much improv ed, up to par a-to-o rtho rat ios of 1. 2 for toluene and 5. 6 for chlor obenzene.
