Abstract:
Di ( 2-ethylhex yl ) phthalate ( DOP) w as pr epared f rom phthalic anhydride and 2-ethy lhex anol via niobium pento xide cataly zed esterification. Intermediate detect ion and kinet ic study show that the r eaction takes place in tw o stages. In the f irst stag e, mono ester is formed rapidly and in the second stage, the mo no ester conver ts to the di-ester DOP via a typical seco nd order react io n. The seco nd order rate constant s and act ivat ion energy w ere determined. Separat ion and recycling o f the catalyst w ere studied. Effect s of react ion par ameters on product acidity and o utw ard appear ance w ere discussed.
