Measuring the molar subst itution ( MS ) of hydro xy pro pyl cellulo se by pr oton nuclear magnetic resonance has been established. The pr ocedure for the determinat ion of MS w as based o n hydroly sis o f hydrox ypropyl cellulose w ith deuteriohydrochlo ric acid and integrat ion of ar ea of the resonance peaks. A chromic acid ox idat io n dist illat io n method has also been used to measure the MS of hydro xy pro py l cellulose. Futhermore, acco rding to the established relation ship betw een MS and content of hy drox ypropyl gr oup ( H C) , the MS of hy dro xy pro pyl cellulose could be calculated. Thus, it is found that the NMR method is feasible.
