Abstract:
The hydrogen bromide is ox idized by chlorine gas directly to form bromine and hydrogen chloride. When the mixture of chlorine gas and hy drog en bromide w ere cooled to around 273 K, there is about 80 % bromine to be condensed into liquid. The residue w as absorpted by tet rachloromethane solut ion and then mixed w ith basic solution to segregate Bromine from tetrachloromethane solut ion. Finally, the pure bromine is obtained by neutralizing w ith sulfuric acid. The result s indicate that when the amount of chlorine gas is in range of 100 % ~ 120 % of theoretical value, the recovery percentage of bromine is over 96 % and the chlorine g as content is < 3. 0 %. This process is suitable for the direct recovery of bromine from hydrogen bromide ) by-product in preparat ion of organic bromide.
