To study the pounding dynamic responses of bridges under vertical earthquakes,a dynamic substructure method is presented here.Considering the multiple impact process and the multiple separation process and the effect of the bridge bearing, the dynamic substructure models of bridges are built and the pounding dynamic governing equations are derived in the modal coordinate system. The Newmark implicit integration method is applied to solve the dynamic governing equations numerically. The pounding dynamic process of the deck against the pier under vertical earthquakes and the pounding force and impulse are simulated. The numerical convergence results and their comparison with the theoretical solution show that the present dynamic substructure method is convergent in numerical calculation and has high numerical precision, and it is suitable for the numerical simulations of pounding responses of bridges under vertical earthquakes.
